Always nice to give and receive

So I was driving into the parking lot to Jamba Juice when I looked and saw a homeless man who ironically didn't look so happy. Once parked I looked Into my wallet and found a couple dollars I could spare.

But then I came up with a better idea, why not give the home less man money and a smoothie. That's exactly what I did. Walked in the store bought the man a smoothie walked across the lot and gave it to him with some money.

The return I got was a shy thankyou and a smile. Not just any smile but an actual honest smile. I came to realize when you give someone what they need rather than what they want. Those are the best smiles.

New View On Racial Profiling

So over the course in expository writing we talked about various topics such as; vocabulary, obesity, the right to your own opinion , and the value of working in groups "outside" of school. Now I have a research paper to write out about what I learned and valued in this classroom mixed in with racial profiling. So I decided to start off with an approach like this.

In life we are given the right to our opinion.
therefore police men have the right to their own opinion--
should we as a whole trust the opinion of a police officer in critical situations?
trust civilians opinions?

Treyvon Martin
Boy shot 7 times
Were those opinions just?

These are some of my brain storming ideas hopefully I can write something worthy for a college grade. Lets see how the road pans out.

SHOT 7 TIMES

Yesterday Erica wrote a well written essay on a young Latino who got deliberately shot 7 times by policemen in fear of getting fired on themselves. The young boy was carrying a rifle that looked real and loaded.

Erica kept using the rhetorical question why 7 times to convey the magnitude and cruelty of the situation. Yes the boy posted a threat but what caused police to shoot this boy 7 times ? There is no reason for this madness or am I being biased?
Was there a reason to there madness. I was affected emotionally by this essay but maybe I should put myself in the police shoes. Dr. Preston showed the classroom the comparison of both rifles. I was appalled almost in awe at the reality of the rifle. It looked real. What was this kid doing with this rifle? If the rifle were to be real would the young kid have actually shot at the police men?
But after going over both perspectives of the situation I thought firing at the young kid was the right thing to do. But not 7 times. Not SEVEN bullets fired into that child's body. One shot kills a bear. 3 shots killed our president. But seven shots into this child is just manslaughter.

May his soul rest in peace. He was put into a society that influenced him wrong. He died with innocence and not understanding. Anyone of us could of been his shoes. Lets just say we are the lucky ones.

RACIAL PROFILING LIVES ON

After reading through the article and taking some mental note--no need for paper. I was able to really relate to the content and examples in the text itself. I am constantly being racially profiled and to think we live in the 21st century? I thought those dog days were over but no I was wrong they still "live". The real question we have to ask our selves is, is there justice to racial profiling? Can this be used for good?

Steve Jobs

QUESTIONS TO ASK OUR SELF:
1) What do you think Jobs will discuss in his commencement speech?
I believe he'll say a pretty motivational speech on how he became rich so hopefully he motivates some students to do great things in life.
2) What do you believe motivates Jobs? Why?
I think there are many reasons that motivates Jobs and people in general. Jobs in my eyes wanted to change the world through his technology. He wanted to prove to all the skeptics that the impossible is indeed possible. He wanted to show to those whose ideas never get heard can be heard by action. Thats what motivates jobs, people. Integrity.
3) As you scan through the text does Jobs make valid points in his speech that the reader can easily relate to?
"You have to trust in somthing- your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever." This text from jobs speech is very easy to relate to. The diction and word placing is fairly simple for any young or older reader to comprehend. It's a perfect example on how jobs main goal is to make everything easier in life. He is very east to understand and never tries to use high vocab to "out smart" someone, it shows in his work his intelligence.
4) Does Steve Job's success in life reflect in his speech?
After going ahead an reading the speech you can really tell the man is laid back and a human being like any other person. Money has not gotten to him. He had problems in his life like a normal person would and never let those issues stop him from persuing his dreams. He talks about bussiness with love not capital. Those are some of the qualities that make steve different from the rest of the other competition.
KEY CONCEPTS
taking chances     perseverance
risks                    chance
courage               rebels
confidence           irony
manhood             betrayl
SCANNING TEXT
Going through the speech Jobs has 3 main stories to tell, each relaying a different moral message. His first story talks about him dropping out of college a decision most students are scared to do. He stated how it was the best thing he did in his life and if he weren't to have ever done that then Apple wouldn't be apple. He next story sends a message about how he found what he loved at such a young age. HE realized that getting fired from apple was a good thing at the time. it forced him to rethink his stragety and put him through a renaissance in life. A new beginning persay.  His last and final story to shut out the crowd was about dying. "and yet death is the destination we all share" this quote really got to me. It made me respect jobs as a person and appreciate the work he has done. He ends his speech with potraying a picture of a road everyone can walk on and a quote stating "stay hungry, stay foolish"
VOCAB" fairly easy"
Idealistic: pursuing high achieving nobles

dogma: official system of principles concerning faith, morals, etc

relented : becoming more mild, passionate, forgiving

For our group were going to go over Steve Jobs speech for the graduating college. I read over this about a week ago but didnt get the pleasure to go over it with some colleges in class. So here is my chance! After we devote some time to this speech i'll update my blog on a new text that my group will go over! WE have three days on our own to do all this hopefully other than going over two readings, we go over them the right way.

LIT ANALYSIS #2 "Night" by Elie Wiesel

TOPICS AND EVENTS: This story takes you back to during World war 2 and how life was for the jewish community during Hitler's rein as a dictator. The narrator Elie portrays how his life was before World War 2. HE talks about the moment when he was with his two instructors Moshe and Beadle and they found out the terrible news nazi aggressors were coming to take over.He describes nostalgic moments of his child hood and how happy he was during and when his parents were successful his family used to be. His family was very poise and calm about the situation but things soon changed onced many jews were shipped in train loads to concentration camps. From there hima nd his father are stationed at a concentration camp forced to work til they die. In this journey to survive Elie whitnesses countless horrors and unpleasing realities of the camps from people being burned alive to human being being starved to their bones! This is one of your typical miracle stories in the World War 2, Elie loses his dad in the end of all this mess when trying to run 42 miles of snow to survive and stay alive.
The author chose to write this for many reasons, one to let people know some of the grosom horrors the blood thirsty nazis had for the jews. I believe he wrote this story to get unwanted feelings and emotions out of his mind. he went through so much it was only a matter a time til he broke down. If I myself were to ever go through a situation like he did I dont think I would be the same person. With all those images of death and corpse in my head  I would rather write it down on paper to hpefully clear my mind. He is trying to get a message out so hopefully this never happens again for future generations.
Well my friend reccommended this book to me and told me it was really good so I gave it a shot. Im glad I did read it because it really changed the ways i see things in life. Im more grateful for my health and what I have and realized I dont deserve a lot of what I have now.
this question made me laugh but yes this book was very realistic. Well at some parts  I just couldnt believe how far mans hatred could be towards a race of human. How evil and low we can stoop down low to. The level of torture and death in this book was at times to much to handle. I just couldnt believe the things nazis would do to jews.
PEOPLE:
Almost every interpretation in this story was based on observations. The author wrote a lot on what he saw and what he felt. I could say the author is a sick minded individual but in the end i realzied he didnt chose to see or live with any of these hard ships. He was forced out of his home to go to concentration camos and work to the death. in the story he says "To forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time." It really opened my eyes when I read this short but powerful quote.
Elie's father was the main reson why he survived the whole ordeal in the first place. Shlomo is the only character throughout the story that the reader can get a good amount of information with. Even though we cant read his thoughts its easy to see he loves his son very much and would give up his life for him. We find this information about Shlomo through indirect characterization.
The author wrote about his own father because of the aid and encouragement his father gave him to stay alive during this dilema.I belive the author put his father in the story to convey the lack of faith and hope as you go through more and more days in the concentration camps. But it just shows how a man can still find love in his heart.
"I shall always remember that smile. From what world did it come from?" This is a another perfect example of indirect characterization. It shows the battle between Elies's faith. He constanly questions where god is through out the story because he just cant believe the horrors god has put him through. I believe the message in this we all have our own battles but it depends on how strong willed we are to over come them.
STYLE:
The author did a little bit of both. He foreshadowed the outcomes of how he and other would soon die. They were fairly obvious to say the least. The authors vocab was educated. This man loves god but struggles to believe in one. You can tell he is very straight forward yet talks with passion and love. He describes scense very well. When he talked about how he was forced to watch a young boy die sloowly right in front of his eyes really shows his skills in describing. He would describe somethings so well that I would have to stop reading cause the descriptions were so graphic, i couldnt handle it.THe authro uses strong words and portays images to set a mood. He made my mood change a lot , it would get me mad but knowing im getting mad over a book shows im engaged in it. The book at times made me feel so sad and sorry for these people and hate the spoileed people like myself in society today. But we have to accept times are very different now.Author didnt really offer any articles except for what he read during his time in the ghetto camps/
ENDURING MEMORY:
THis book really made me question the value of life. The story takes the value of life to a whole nother level! Why do you pray?" he asked me, after a moment. "Why did I pray? A strange question. Why did I live? Why did I breathe?" THis quote really tested my faith and made me question the same thing he did. Why do we do the things we do>? Who are we praying too? A god? and why would god let these tings happen to us.

TO ACT OR NOT TO ACT

After comparing the differences in both speeches I realized I prefer Jobs speech. For one in Job's speech he is speaking in a language/native tounge that is more clear to my ears. Yes shakespere makes good points on whether or not you are going to act. Job had all of those ingredients in his soup and some.

DEAR STEVE

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish
No offense to anyone reading this or to the course but I was finally given a good piece of words or literature or what ever you call it today. I think the reason it impacted me so much right now is because I am currently applying for colleges at the moment. And have to choose my major. And have to decide where I want to be for the next four years of my life. And have to make sure Im going to like it because if I don't. If I don't find what I love or do what I love to do for the rest of my life then it's a waste of life. My life. So now I'm on a mission a new declaration of learning shimimabob. I have to discover what I love, fast. Because the decisions I make right now as a 17 year old are going to shape who I am as a person career and happiness wise 5, 10, 20 years from now!

Journal #31

When ever I find out something of put two and two together I get this sense of triumph ! I have no idea why but I just do. For example when I'm doing my evil ap physics homework I always get stumped and the teacher doesn't give me all the help I need he rather me understand te concept and derive he solution. So when I come to enlightenment and actually figure out the answer to the question it makes me the happiest teenager in earth ! Humans don't like secrets or not knowing a certain subject, we like to be in control.

Value of life

I didn't want to learn about the value of life so I guess I'm not at engaged in it as I should be. After taking a glance at the module , I realized time and life are short. Make the best of it everyone says but no one does. I'm still young and know I need to mature more but once Ido the sky is not the limit with me. Chickowww

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE AFTERLIFE. SERIOUSLY

I really liked the perspective laid out for me on life after death or no life after death. Author talks about how we take for granted people containing living their lives after we die. I never thought of just dying and nothing ever happening after that. Like I don't want it to be that way, I want to go to heaven but articles like these really question if there is even a heaven? I'm glad I read this article because it made me realize how short our lives are and how we need to use it more wisely. We only have so much time and with a little confidence and knowledge we can apply some skills to make an impact in the world. It takes focus, dedication, and curisma. Something many people struggle with. Worrying about what people think about ourselve.

Literature Analysis

Topics and or Events:
1) Every Second Counts is about the remarkable story of Lance's Armstrong comeback from testicular cancer and how he fights the odds and wins the Tour De France 5 consecative times. It captures the mindset of a man who has to make time for his family as well his love for biking. But along this perilous journey he talks about his experience with cancer which ironically taught him to live life day by day.
2) Lance wrote this book to let everyone know how his life was during cancer and how precious time is. he wanted to let the whole world understand that he is just an ordinary man like everyone else, he explicitly stated over and over again that if he can survive cancer so can you.
3) I chose this book because I myself am an athlete and thought it would be easy to read about a biography of an athlete. From the front cover of Lance Armstrongs exstatic smile I could already relate and conncet to the book. Once I started reading I was hooked. He quickly talks about his first encounter of finding out he had cancer, from that point on I knew  I would like this book. " now that I know im going to die, what will I do?" this quote from the book is a perfect example on how realistic and logical this book is.
4)
This question made me laugh. Yes this book is as real as it gets and some! Cancer, bike riding, family, how much more real can it get? His thoughts and feelings towards cancer really inspired me to do my best in life. Appreciate what I have today because in fact it could all be gone or change tomorrow. I connected to lance in a life threatening sickness and athletic point of view.

People:
1)  Lance talks a lot about his family; wife named kik, son luke, and twin daughters. There are so many people mentioned in this book that it would to much to list them all but the ones he talks about most and sincerly is his family. He describes hiw wife as supportive and strong minded. he has very good communication with her but never mention any fights. I'm sure they do fight but why would he want to but that in a book as inspiring as this? I bet if I met his family in person it would be the typical kids playing and couple arguing about something situation. but after reading the book and understanding how Lance Embraces life I came to a conclusion, the way he describes his family is the way they actuall act. Man had life threatening cancer for petes sake! His life is in no way normal.
2) His cancer friend Sally reed is a cancer survivor patient who clocked in over a thousand volunteer hours devoted to helping cancer patients. Down side is lance is not very good at physically describing people so I can not do the honor of giving you a full description of a certain person. He more describes ones personality and action which is fine, you dont judge a book by the cover.
His wife kik, very beautiful slender women with green eyes. She has blonde hair is a very strong hearted women says armstrong. She helped hi, get through cancer.
Luke lance's son is a almsot split image of himself. Though lance did not really describe how his son looked his described his sons ambition and love for biking " He fell off his bike face first and after some bruises, cuts, and crying he got right back on it, Just like his daddy". I can tell from how he talks about his sone he is very proud and happy to have one. He gets deep pleasure and satisfaction to know he has a prodigy of his own.
3) Well the fact that Lance Armstong himself talks about them a lot says it all. With all the people he sees, cancer patients, public, press, cycylist; he seems to talk about these the most. These individuals mean the most to him in his precious life. They deserve to be talked about.

Style
1) The author used a more journalist/biography approach with hints on the symbolism of life terms. For example, " What I didnt and couldnt address at the time was the prospect of life.".
2) Lance loves to use lenghty descriptions of everything. Forexample in the beggining of the book I loved how he described the giant waterfall he goes to jump in just to clear his mind. " Its a drop so long.... Long enough to think first one thing, A Little fear is good for you." .This quote really captured the use and the meaning the water fall has to him. Most books will describe the water fall magnificent or even try to glorify it cliche. lance describes it for what it is and what its made to be used for and that is clear your mind from all the obstacles life gives you.
3) The author uses his own thoughts to set a certain tone in parts of the story.
4) I believe Lance had very different perspectives towards cancer. Its a diease that could of killed him but having survived it gave him new motive to do better and work harder in life, " My house is burned, but I can see the sky." Its very ironic how he is in some way happy the thing that was going to kill him saved him? MAde him appreciate the little things in life and with nothing to lose and everything to gain lance is just a dangerous man to be around. Its the reason why he is so optimistic, postive and happy in to be alive.
5) Author didnt really offer any articles excpet what you can hear from the Tour De France skeptics. But if you take a close look into the book he talks about articles accusing him of doping up, doubt he wants to prmotoe those articles

PROSE & CONS: OBESITY

Pro:

Con:

Who is to blame for all these deaths due to obesity, some say it is our "own choices" and others strongly debate it's the "Fast Food Companies fault for the deaths of Americans. There is a major war going on in America as we speak, a rising epidemic that is getting known to be known as a "silent killer" and it's name is obesity. Though it takes thousands of lives due to it's life threatening complications, it's one of the easiest diseases to prevent from ever happening in the first place.
Many people in the public believe that instead of blaming fast food companies causing obesity in America, we should blame "ourselves". When we walk into a fast food resturant such as Mcdonalds, we are choosing to eat there. You as a customer should take full responsibilty for making your own choices. You cannot blame anyone but your own self for gaining weight and becoming obese. Fast food industries only design marketing skills to get you to eat their product, but it's your decision whether you eat their garbage. Many people are fully convinced fast food restuarants are not to be blamed for the leading cause of obesity in America, but we should get a better perspective on what they contribute to the cause.
Fast food companies do not do a real good job on telling you what the heck you are eating or being fed. For all you know it could be total crap with flavor so at least it taste good, but at the end of the day it is still crap being digested into your own body. If you would of known that fast food was high in sodium, trans fat, and sugar would you of eaten it in the first place? Why can't their be healthy fast food instead of heart disease, kidney cancer food? The problem is their are fast food chains at every corner, so constantly seeing food will of course constantly make you hungry. There has been many law suits and complaints to spread awareness on the dangers of fast food but the companies have done a very well executed job to cover those issues up.Why? Because if the public was more aware of the dangers of fast food they would not eat it via fast food chains go out of buisness.
It's very clear there is no pro what so ever to obesity. Obesity can or will lead to high cholestral, heart disease, kidney failure, high blood pressure and or death. But the only way to avoid these issues is by our choices or to avoid fast food chains. What can we possibly do to end this rising epidemic before it takes one of our own family, friend's life. The answer is simple. We as a nation need to spread awareness across America so that every individual is aware that what they eat, what's fueling their body is the poison that could kill them.

TEXT ANALYSIS #1

In the article " The Blame Game" it talked about how we should not be blaming fast food chains for obesity but ourselves. We are the individuals who chose what to put the food on our plate not them. So you can quickly infer it's all their (fast food companies) fault, but not exactly. Before the law suits and complaints, fast food companies did not do a good enough effort on telling the public what their feeding them. Most people walked in the resturant and walk out having no idea their meal consists of high sodium, fat, and sugar. Which comes to the conclusion we all have a part of the blame but instead of blaming each other let us start by making better choices. Educating ourselves on what is good to eat and what is bad. Cause at the end of the day you are what you eat, so know what your eating!

THIS IS PHAT

http://nutritionfacts.org/video/more-than-an-apple-a-day-preventing-our-most-common-diseases/
This video gave out a lot of good factual information relating to your health. Out of the 15 top causes of death in america, 6 of those are health related due to your choices! But we come to ask ourselves well how do I prevent from becoming sick so I won't die. Well the answer is easy, avoid getting sick in the first place. What was your diet before walking into that doctors office? How much sleep were you getting? Did you exercise knowing it could potentially boost your immune system three to five times more efficient! Did you know that neglecting all these factors could lead to you getting sick. yes there is a chance of you getting sick by doing these things but just by addressing these topics of your health can help reduce the risk of you getting ill. If you ate more natural foods rich with antioxidants(strawberries, apples, oranges, etc.), got a little more rest, and exercised just a little more(30min) you could potentially never have to walk into the doctors office again. Becoming more aware of the fact that your body is a fine tuned machine that requires special attention is crucial. Just think about it, if you don't take care of your body now I'm afraid you may be fat, over weight, diabetic, stressed but most of all not happy. It will come to the question of how did I let myself go? what caused this to happen? All these questions and situations can be prevented if you just took a little more time to take care of your body. We have all been affected by it and can talk about a self experience were a family member died shortly due to bad health. Over 34 percent of Americans are obese, 17 percent are teenagers. Let's start now to end this epidemic, this silent killer.

REFLECTIONS ON WEEK 1

1) As for computer and internet access I would rate "fair",my laptop is really slow and my family is always on my computer. I am pretty involved in my family and most of the time they get upset when I choose to do homework than spend time with them, which leads to unwanted conflicts. That's as far as I'll go when it comes to describing my family issues.

2) My 6th through 8th grade AVID teacher Mr. Reynoso changed my life. He taught me how even though you have struggles in your life there are much more unfortunate human beings in the world who have it worse. He gave me a new approach on life, how to be more appreciative with what I have. He had our class play a line game where he would split the class in two with a long piece of tape. He then would ask all of us a question and if the question applies to you then you walk to the line. It got pretty intense and the game even made him emotional. I had no idea what was going on but it made my classroom stronger as a whole and more aware of the problems in the class.

3) I guess I'm pretty stoked about the blogger. I really like the idea/concept of open source learning its really effective as will be the next step to dinamacially improving education. With the knowledge I gain in this class will give me the tools to become a better student, individual, and citizen in everyday life.

What is Expository Compososition?

(According to dictionary.com)

Expository: Of the nature of exposition, serving to expound, set forth, or explain: an expository essay, writing
Composition: The act of combining parts or elements to form a whole

So looking at these two definitions didn't really aid me much into the meaning of expository writing. But after some quick research I found expository writing is a type of writing used to inform people or give information on a certain topic they believe already have some knowledge on. IT'S ALL ITALIAN TO ME !

The quote translates to: "He who has begun is half done: dare to be wise! Make a beginning"

What it means is even though your Senior for example, almost done with high school, doesn't mean you cannot start a new beginning or change to your life! Making good decisions starts today. Do not be afraid to take chances but take chances with good judgement. Once out of grade school your life actually starts, be ready to be wise!!
